Message from the DVC, Prof Andre Keet
The Science Centre as a Promise
The Science Centre (SC) is a dynamic promise between the university, the broader community, and society; where knowledge meets curiosity, and innovation inspires transformation. Cutting across knowledges to advance scientific and social innovation, the SC seeks to bring the university, the private and public sectors, industry, community, science and technology together under the banner of ‘science for society’. It aims to bring scientific concepts to life, making learning both accessible and engaging for all ages.

With support from the Department of Science and Innovation, sister institutions, and other partners, the Centre is poised to become a hub of participatory research, public engagement, and inclusive science communication. It works towards a scientifically more literate society, a more engaged community, and a more innovative future. It embraces a comprehensive approach to science engagement inclusive of diverse publics to offer interactive learning experiences that spark curiosity and foster a culture of inquiry. Committed to inter- and transdisciplinary work and collaborations, the Centre, through dynamic programming, seeks to utilise the University’s resources to showcase the diverse contributions of different faculties, and partners. With rotating exhibits, evolving content, and a commitment to inclusivity, it aims to reflect South Africa’s unique cultural and scientific landscape.
